How to Measure Your Cat for a Harness (The Right Way)

Why Getting the Right Fit Matters

A poorly fitted harness can be dangerous too loose and your cat can escape, too tight and it causes discomfort. Whether you're shopping for a cat harness for walking or a cat chest harness escape proof, getting the measurements right is the most important step before you buy.

At PawsiFyPets, we've designed our harnesses with adjustable, safety-first fits but you still need to know your cat's measurements to choose the right size.

What You'll Need

  • A soft measuring tape (or a piece of string + ruler)
  • Treats to keep your cat calm
  • A helper if your cat is wiggly!

Step 1: Measure the Neck

Wrap the measuring tape around the base of your cat's neck where a collar would naturally sit. You should be able to slip two fingers underneath comfortably. This is your neck circumference.

💡 Tip: Most adult cats measure between 8–12 inches around the neck.

Step 2: Measure the Chest (Girth)

This is the most important measurement for a cat chest harness. Measure around the widest part of your cat's chest, just behind the front legs. Again, leave two fingers of room for comfort.

💡 Tip: Most adult cats measure between 12–18 inches around the chest.

Step 3: Measure the Body Length (Optional)

For vest-style or full-body harnesses, measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. This helps ensure the harness doesn't restrict movement or rub against the belly.

How to Choose the Right Harness Size

Once you have your measurements, compare them to the size chart on each product page. At PawsiFy Pets, our harnesses come in XS, S, M, and L to accommodate kittens through large breeds.

Size Neck (inches) Chest (inches)
XS 6–8" 10–12"
S 8–10" 12–14"
M 10–12" 14–16"
L 12–14" 16–18"

Tips for First-Time Harness Users

  • Introduce slowly: Let your cat sniff and explore the harness before putting it on.
  • Practice indoors first: Walk your cat around the house before heading outside.
  • Check the fit regularly: Kittens grow fast re-measure every few months.
  • Use positive reinforcement: Treats and praise go a long way!
